Frequently asked questions

What skills and sports can athletes train with SAM?

SAM is designed for a wide range of skill development, including back handsprings, front and back tucks, layouts, fulls, double fulls, cheerleading jumps, air awareness, body positions and technique.

SAM can be used across cheerleading, gymnastics, diving, martial arts, acro and other movement-based disciplines. For diving programs, SAM also provides a valuable dryland training environment for developing rotation, body position and air awareness before progressing skills to the water.

How does SAM’s Ten-Level Step-Down Progression System work?

SAM’s Ten-Level Step-Down Progression System allows athletes to begin with a high level of bungee assistance and gradually step down the amount of assistance as their technique, body control and confidence improve.

Athletes can progress from 100% assistance down to just 2%, creating a clear, structured pathway toward performing the skill independently. As assistance is reduced, coaches can step back to observe timing, form and body positions while providing focused feedback throughout the progression.

How is SAM different from a traditional overhead spotting system?

Traditional overhead spotting systems typically require a coach to actively pull and manage ropes throughout the skill. With SAM, the adjustable bungee system provides the spotting assistance.

This creates a dedicated training station where athletes can perform repeated skills while coaches have the freedom to step back, observe technique and provide feedback. Assistance can then be progressively reduced as the athlete develops greater control and independence.

How much space does SAM require, and can it be stored when not in use?

SAM requires a floor footprint of approximately 10 feet wide by 6 feet deep (3.0 m × 1.8 m).

This gives facilities a simple way to determine whether they have enough room before purchasing. Because SAM is portable, that space does not need to be permanently dedicated to the system.

When training is finished, SAM can be folded down in under two minutes, rolled out of the training area and stored until it is needed again. This allows gyms and programs to use the same valuable floor space for other classes, equipment and activities.

Is there an age or weight limit for using SAM?

SAM does not have a specific age or weight limit. It can be used by athletes of all ages, provided their physical condition is healthy and appropriate for the type of training being performed.

SAM’s bungee system can provide up to 200 pounds of lift at 100% assistance. For athletes weighing 200 pounds or less, this means they have the option to train with full assistance and then gradually reduce that assistance through SAM’s Ten-Level Step-Down Progression System.

Athletes weighing more than 200 pounds can still use SAM. The system will continue to provide up to 200 pounds of lift, with the remaining body weight supported by the athlete.

For example, a 250-pound athlete can receive 200 pounds of assistance, leaving approximately 50 pounds of load through their feet at the highest assistance level.

As with any athletic training equipment, coaches should select an appropriate level of assistance based on the athlete’s physical condition, ability and the skill being trained.

What comes with SAM, and what else do I need to get started?

Your SAM includes the complete steel frame system, bungees, ball-bearing swivels and carabiner clips. SAM arrives pre-assembled and is designed for quick setup.

Panel mats and athlete belts are sold separately. SAM is designed to work with your existing panel mats and requires a minimum of three. Choose a tumbling or twisting belt based on the skills you plan to train.

How long does it take to set up and store SAM?

SAM is designed to be quick and easy to set up, use and store. Two middle-school-level athletes can roll SAM into position and have it ready for training in less than two minutes.

Because setup is so fast, SAM can be brought out during a class or training session without taking valuable time away from instruction.

When training is complete SAM folds down quickly, rolls easily and can be moved back into storage until the next session.

How long does SAM take to ship, and where is it made?

Current lead time for a SAM system is approximately 2 weeks.

Every SAM is manufactured in Grand Rapids, Michigan, using steel, bungees and hardware sourced from U.S. vendors. Each system is tested before being packed and prepared for shipment.

Shipping charges are calculated separately and are the responsibility of the customer.

What warranty and return protection comes with SAM?

Every SAM is backed by a 5-Year Limited Warranty, giving your program long-term protection on its investment. The warranty covers defects in materials or workmanship under normal use, subject to the terms of the SAM Spotting Systems warranty.

Eligible returns are accepted within 30 days of the item's shipped date. Returned products are subject to a 5% restocking fee, and return shipping costs are the responsibility of the buyer.

Please review the complete Warranty and Return Policy for full terms and conditions.

 Who is SAM?

SAM isn’t a person — S.A.M. stands for Spotting Assistance Machine.

The name was created in 2009, when the first SAM prototypes were being developed and tested. At the time, athletes and coaches had all kinds of names for the new system — a rig, a flip machine, a “flippy thing” and more.

Because SAM was fundamentally different from traditional ceiling-mounted spotting systems, it needed a name of its own. The goal was something simple, memorable and fun for athletes to use.

And that’s how SAM was born — the Spotting Assistance Machine that helps coaches and athletes train skills through progressive assistance, repetition and confidence-building.
